En hög inavelskoefficient anger att hästen har högre andel uppsättningar homozygota gener. Det ökar risken för genetiska defekter och sjukdomar vilket leder till sämre sundhet, lägre prestation och sänkt fruktsamhet. Ibland linejavlas medvetet för att försöka få fram hästar med mindre variation på vissa specifika egenskaper, exempelvis hästar med specifik färg, specifik ras eller prestation.

Vad som är för hög inavelskoefficient finns många åsikter om. Enligt forskningen kan man statistiskt se negativa inavelseffekter vid 5%, och en betydande sänkt vitalitet vid 10% och uppåt.

Beräkning av inavelskoefficienter

Inavelskoefficienten F_X beräknas här i Hästkatalogen enligt Wrights formel. Den summeras på gemensamma anfäder de första 8 eller 16 leden registrerade i hästkatalogen (beroende på hur komplett stammen är) enligt:
F_X = ∑(½^n₁+n₂+1 *(1 + F_A))
Där n₁ och n₂ är antalet generationer mellan en gemensam anfader och hästen och F_A är anfaderns egen inavelskoefficient. Om anfaderns stam är okänd antas F_A vara 0, så inavelskoefficienten är lågt skattad, särskilt om det saknas mycket angivna hästar i hästens stam.

Komplett stam-koefficienten c₈ är ett mått på hur fullständig hästens stamtavla är de första åtta leden. En hög c₈ ger en ganska säker inavelskoefficient F_X. Motsvarande mått för de fyra första leden är c₄. Om c₄ är under 100% så är onoggranneheten på inavelskofficienten stor och kan vara ganska mycket högre i verkligheten än den beräknade här.
